B94.5 Radio Station

My internship as a “B-tern” really gave me insight into how a media company works. I assisted with the “Morning Getaway” show by researching relevant topics for the hosts to talk about on air. Doing this allowed me to see the value of staying up to date with current topics about what’s going on in the world. We of course mainly dealt with pop culture news, nevertheless this lesson can be applied to all genres of media.
I was also able to get on-air experience, which was exciting and nerve racking at the same time. The feeling is kind of like playing a championship game only you’re not directly in front of your audience, just in their ears. During my segment at the end of each show I would focus on social media trends and share hilarious content with the audience. It was a great feeling being able to enjoy what I do while also being creative. I was even able to co-host the show a few times when one of the hosts was on vacation. I never thought that was something I could do, but I did it. This internship reassured this was the type of work I want to do.

This nonprofit television station located in Berks County is where Matt gained relevant experience in visual media. He was able to learn different positions within the station such as operating a camera, controlling audio, and editing. He also assisted in filming community events which allowed him to get to know the people in Berks County.
During my internship at BCTV as a tech intern I was able to become a renaissance man of the station. By this I mean they put me in several different positions to give me the experience that I wanted. Working at the station I learned how fast paced it can be. You always have to stay on your toes and be able to adjust to the situations that surface. I remember we were shooting a live show and at one point someone’s microphone stopped working. I was operating one of the cameras and had to crawl to the desk where the hosts were sitting so the camera couldn’t see me. I was able to fix the microphone, and crawled back to my camera. These experiences are so valuable to me. I was able to adjust to the situation and keep going.
I also worked in the control room creating banners for the show that would pop up on the screen using a program called title blue. It was important to get the correct information from the hosts before the show started so I could create the banners accordingly. They were all live shows, so there was no room for error. The station also allowed me to gain experience controlling the audio, making adjustments throughout the show depending on how loud or soft the hosts were talking. I know all of these experiences will help me in the future as I pursue a career in this industry.
For my video project in my Mediamaking for the masses class I used my mom as my subject. I filmed her doing things that I enjoy. The goal of this project was revolved around creating a story about my identity by showing what makes me tick. I love spending time with my pets and getting them out of the house. I grew up playing GameCube it is still one of my favorite consoles to play. The nostalgia that the system brings just takes me back to my childhood. Reading comic books are a huge part of my life. I am a huge nerd when it comes to super heroes. The stories and artwork in these books can be very inspiring when I want to be creative. I have also become addicted to playing pickleball. My friends and I try to meet up a couple times a week to play. Finally I showcase my love for my love for film with one of my favorite movies, Goodfellas.
